English for Artists, Course Description:

Program:
English for Artists is designed as an intensive English course for artists and students wishing to improve discussion of their own artistic production in English. Course size will be limited to 5-7 students per group and will meet weekly for 2 teaching hours. Each course will run 12 weeks. Students are invited to bring in their own work, and the teaching will center on how to talk about the student's work, process and ideas. Classes are held in a "group critique" format, with presenting artists making a short presentation of their work, followed by an open discussion of the work led by the teacher. Emphasis will be placed on specific artistic vocabulary and theory. Students will be expected to make several presentations of their own work as well as attend discussion and critique of others work.

Concept:
As the art market continues to internationalize, with the almost annual advent of new "bienales," international art fairs, and traveling exhibitions, artists increasingly face the need to articulately discuss their work and ideas in English. In addition to the basic skills taught by most universities and art schools, art comes with the added weight of a highly specialized, professional vocabulary and set of theoretical terms. Without comfortable conversation levels and knowledge of these terms, artists find themselves barred from discussion and potential inclusion in the international scene.

English for Artists will address this need by specifically focusing on the student's work. Each student will be invited to make two to three presentations of their work for during the run of the course. Presentations will be informal, friendly discussions designed to give students the vocabulary and comfort they need to talk about their work and ideas in English. In addition, excursions to local galleries and museums to discuss the work of other contemporary artists may be included.
